design a calendar tailored to your rhythm, literally right now

News flash: a calendar filled ONLY with things you look forward to is the ONLY way we can make our life sustainable–and not hurtling towards burnout. (This is why everyone and their mother is burned out.)

So! The method we tackle in Femmes takes, like, 20 minutes: 

  1. Start with a blank weekly calendar.

  2. Fill in time blocks for your self-care routines that represent your care for the creative vessel (your body).

  3. Fill in time blocks you intend to spend with family, social events, and–critically–a block or two where you want to preserve UNSCHEDULED TIME. 

  4. Fill in time blocks for deep work–at least two hour chunks, and will be spent on creative work and, occasionally, planning/strategy. 

  5. Fill in time blocks where you know your energy is high and at its most social. This will be your meeting availability.

Voila. You have your dream week, tailored to your natural rhythm.

Trying this out will, over time, give you a sense of what your natural yearly and monthly rhythm are. Concretely, we’ll set up this calendar for you as kind of a first draft, and then iterate based on how you actually feel.

Like I mentioned yesterday, experimenting with my own natural rhythm has unlocked:

  • One contiguous month off, twice a year 

  • The last week of every month off 

  • No meetings on Mondays or Fridays, ever

  • On meeting days, meetings happen between 10am and 3pm.

Look at all that freedom. It’s outrageous. Improper. Possibly obnoxious. Probably illegal. 

And you deserve it.
